Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Cairo on Sunday for an official visit, following his recent trip to Doha, the capital of Qatar.
During his stay in Egypt, President Mohamud is scheduled to hold what officials described as “important talks” with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring areas of cooperation between the two countries.
The visit comes just one week after the Somali leader traveled to Ethiopia, where he participated in the launch of a major regional initiative aimed at enhancing infrastructure and economic development across the Horn of Africa.
The timing of the Cairo visit is diplomatically significant, given the ongoing tensions between Ethiopia and Egypt over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and its potential impact on the flow of Nile waters. Somalia has maintained relations with both countries, positioning itself within a complex regional diplomatic landscape.
Further details regarding the outcomes of President Mohamud’s meetings in Cairo are expected following the high-level talks.
