Somali Government deploys National Army forces to Puntland regions ahead of major State event.

The Federal Government of Somalia has officially deployed units of the Somali National Army (SNA) to areas within Puntland State, amid growing public discussion in recent days over plans to establish federal forces operating directly under Mogadishu’s command in the region.

In the past few hours, a contingent of SNA troops arrived in Laascaanood, where they are set to reinforce security in the capital of the Northeastern State of Somalia. The deployment is aimed at stabilizing the city and ensuring public safety during an upcoming high-profile national event.

The troops were received on the outskirts of Laascaanood by the President of the Northeastern State, Abdiqaadir Ahmed Aw-Aali (Firdhiye), who welcomed the forces and emphasized their responsibility to safeguard peace and security. He urged the soldiers to cooperate closely with local security units and regional authorities, underscoring unity between federal and state forces.

“You are here to protect peace and stability. As members of the Somali National Army and brothers from the Northeastern State, you must demonstrate cooperation. You are the forces who liberated Laascaanood,” President Firdhiye said.

Meanwhile, a statement released by Somalia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that SNA units led by General Jimcaale had arrived in Laascaanood as part of the federal security arrangements.

According to the ministry, the troops will be tasked with securing visiting delegations, including senior national leaders such as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who are expected in the city.

Laascaanood is set to host the inauguration ceremony of the President and administration of the Northeastern State of Somalia, an event expected to draw top federal officials and regional leaders.

The government says the deployment reflects its commitment to coordination with regional administrations and to maintaining security during major national and political milestones.
