The Somali Federal Government’s forces have ramped up military operations in the Lower Shabelle region, focusing on securing areas and countering activities by the militant group Al-Shabaab (‘AS’). The heightened efforts are part of an ongoing strategy to strengthen security across key areas of South West State.
The operations are concentrated in the regions between Afgooye and Marka districts, where federal troops have reached various villages and established new military bases, according to reports from local sources. These bases aim to bolster the military’s presence and ensure that Al-Shabaab militants are prevented from carrying out attacks.
In a significant move, the federal forces are working alongside a specialized unit known as “14th October,” whose main base is located in Marka, the regional capital. This special unit has played a pivotal role in securing strategic locations within the region.
During the operation, security forces arrested individuals suspected of having ties to Al-Shabaab, and investigations are currently underway. Military officers also took time to engage with local communities, urging residents to cooperate with security forces in ensuring peace and stability.
Lower Shabelle is home to large military camps that house both Somali federal forces and African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) troops. At times, these forces have conducted joint operations, enhancing the security efforts in the region.
The intensified security operations come as the Somali government continues to push back against Al-Shabaab’s influence in key regions, aiming to stabilize the country and restore peace to areas long affected by conflict and insurgency.
