Somali Disaster Management Agency Issues Severe Cyclone Warning

Mogadishu, Somalia – The National Disaster Management Agency (@SoDMA_Somalia) has issued an urgent warning about a tropical cyclone named Laly brewing in the Indian Ocean with wind speed of 75-100km/hour, which is expected to affect the coastal areas of Jubbaland, Southwest States, and the Benadir region.

In a press release, the agency warned that Cyclone Laly is rapidly approaching coastal cities, including Mogadishu, Barawe, Marka, Jamame, Kismayo, and Badhadhe. The public is advised to exercise extreme caution as the cyclone could cause significant property damage and pose serious risks to residents in these areas.

“The Somali Disaster Management Agency has issued a severe cyclone warning named Laly, which is rapidly approaching coastal cities, including Mogadishu, Barawe, Marka, Jamame, Kismayo, and Badhadhe. The public is advised to exercise extreme caution,” read the post by the Somalia Disaster Management Agency in part.

The agency highlighted the particular vulnerability of coastal areas and the potential for extensive damage, especially to infrastructure and fishing equipment. Residents are urged to take precautionary measures, including removing fishing equipment, commercial boatsfrom the sea and staying away from coastal areas.

SoDMA has expressed its concern about the potential impact of Cyclone Laly, emphasizing the importance of preparedness to minimize the damage and ensure the safety of residents. The agency is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as the cyclone progresses.

Residents are advised to stay tuned for further updates and to follow the safety guidelines issued by the authorities. The Somali government is working to coordinate relief efforts and provide support to the affected areas to mitigate the impact of the cyclone.
