Somali Community in Switzerland Protests Over Ethiopia-Somaliland Controversial Pact

Members of the Somali community in Switzerland rallied in protest against Ethiopia’s ‘aggression in the Somali Sea. Standing in solidarity with the Somali government’s stance on protecting Somali land, the community condemned Ethiopia’s alleged attempts to forcibly occupy territory.

Demonstrators echoed the call made by the Somali president, urging Somali communities worldwide to voice their opposition to Ethiopia’s actions.

The protesters directed a strong message to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, accusing him of reigniting hostilities between Somalia and Ethiopia. Holding placards with slogans like “Somali’s sea belongs to Somalis,” the demonstrators passionately conveyed their rejection of Ethiopia’s involvement in the region.

The Swiss-based Somali community urged Somali diaspora communities globally to organize rallies against what they perceive as Ethiopia’s territorial ambitions. The protest reflects the deep concern within the diaspora regarding the potential impact of Ethiopia’s recent agreement with Somaliland.

Earlier this month, Ethiopia and Somaliland reached an agreement that includes plans for a port and a military base in the Saylac Sea. In return, Ethiopia committed to granting international recognition to Somaliland. Despite facing international condemnation and pressure over the agreement, Ethiopia has maintained its stance that external criticism “will not deter the implementation of the accord.”

The situation continues to unfold against the backdrop of heightened tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, with the Somali diaspora playing an active role in voicing their concerns on an international platform.
