Somali Cabinet Urges Aid Agencies to Address Drought in Awdal Region

The Federal Government of Somalia’s Cabinet held its weekly meeting today, focusing on urgent assistance for those affected by drought in the Awdal region, particularly in the districts of Saylac and Lughaya, along with surrounding villages.

During the meeting, the Ministry of Interior and the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) provided a report detailing the severity of the drought and its impact on the local population, livestock, and agricultural production.

The findings highlighted the urgent need for immediate action to alleviate the suffering caused by this environmental crisis.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who chaired the meeting, urged government agencies to step up their efforts in addressing the drought conditions in these areas.

He emphasized the importance of delivering immediate aid to the affected communities, calling on both the Somali public and international organizations to participate in the relief efforts.

In addition to discussing the drought, the Cabinet approved a memorandum of understanding proposed by the Ministry of Labor, which establishes cooperation between the governments of Somalia and Turkey.

This agreement aims to enhance job creation and workforce development, reflecting a commitment to improving employment opportunities in Somalia.

The Cabinet’s actions is said to underscore the urgent need for both national and international collaboration to combat the effects of drought while also focusing on long-term solutions for workforce development. The combined approach aims to ensure that communities can recover from the current crisis and build resilience against future challenges.
