Security has been tightened in Dhusamareb, the capital of Somalia’s Galmudug State, with armed personnel not involved in securing the regional government headquarters barred from carrying weapons in the city.
The measures come ahead of the planned inauguration of newly elected Galmudug leader Liibaan Axmed Hasan at the regional government headquarters.
Speaking to the media, the Dhusamareb Police Commander said authorities were enforcing the restrictions to strengthen security as officials and other invited guests arrive for the inauguration ceremony.
Security teams have also intensified vehicle checks across the city to monitor the movement of people and vehicles as part of the wider security arrangements.
Meanwhile, Liibaan has been holding separate meetings with guests expected to attend his inauguration. Some of the visitors are understood to be arriving ahead of senior Federal Government officials and other invited delegations.
