Security Council calls on Somalia Government & ATMIS to conduct counter-al-Shabaab operations.

The United Nations Security Council has called on the Federal Government of Somalia and the African Union Mission ATMIS in Somalia to work together to prevent al-Shabaab attacks

The Security Council first condemned the deadly attack on a Burundian military base in El-Baraf, Middle Shabelle region on 03-05-2022.

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest possible terms the heinous terrorist attack by Al-Shabaab against the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) Forward Operating Base in Elbaraf, Middle Shabelle region, on 3 May

The members of the Security Council expressed their full support for the efforts by the Federal Government of Somalia and ATMIS to counter the threat posed by Al-Shabaab.

They underlined the importance of preserving the gains thus far registered in Somalia and enhancing the capacity support to the Somali Security Forces and ATMIS

The United Nations Security Council extends its condolences to the Government of Burundi and to the families of the soldiers killed in the attack, calling it “a national hero who is part of the peace process in Somalia.”

A Burundian official says 30 soldiers have been killed and 22 others wounded in an attack in the town of El-Baraf.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it killed 173 soldiers, wounded several others and captured the camp. Al-Shabaab released photos from the El-Baraf camp.
