Saudi Arabian Airlines will soon begin operating direct flights to Mogadishu, the Somali Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed, marking a significant boost to air connectivity between Somalia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The new route is expected to ease travel for Somali pilgrims heading to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah and significantly reduce the cost of Hajj and Umrah by cutting out transit stopovers. Officials say the flights will also enhance people-to-people ties, trade, and investment between the two countries.
The development comes as the Federal Government of Somalia continues to deepen diplomatic and economic relations with Saudi Arabia, while simultaneously scaling back its engagement with the United Arab Emirates amid growing political and security differences.
Aviation authorities welcomed the move, describing it as a milestone in Somalia’s efforts to expand international air links and integrate more closely with key regional partners.
