In a statement, Said Abdullahi Deni, President of the Puntland Regional Government, launched a scathing critique of the National Consultative Council meeting held in Mogadishu over the past few days. Deni described the meeting as “one that does not reflect the interests of the Somali people.”
Deni argued that decisions regarding public interest should not be made by a small group of individuals but should involve broader participation to ensure effectiveness. “What is going on in the National Consultative Council is not something that Puntland is a part of, and it is not something that Puntland is happy with,” Deni stated. He emphasized the need for government councils to come together and involve the people in decision-making processes.
“Decisions made by a few people that do not reflect the feelings of the people are killing time,” Deni said. He expressed hope that wisdom would prevail and accurately reflect the situation in Somalia, considering the diversity of its people. “Puntland is determined to protect the unity of our nation and will continue to seek cooperation with the Somali Government without tiring.”
Deni’s absence from the recent National Consultative Council meetings, where important issues were discussed, underscored his dissatisfaction. He made it clear that the Puntland Regional Government did not endorse the agreements made at the meeting, having rejected them beforehand. Deni’s comments highlight ongoing tensions between the Federal Government and Puntland and the need for greater inclusivity in Somalia’s national decision-making processes.
