President Qoorqoor: “One Person, One Vote Elections Are Feasible”

The President of Galmudug State, Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoorqoor, has expressed confidence in the feasibility of conducting one person, one vote elections in the federal government of Somalia. He stated that the necessary procedures and legal frameworks for such elections have already been prepared.

President Qoorqoor affirmed Galmudug State’s commitment to contributing to the realization of these elections, which aim to replace the indirect electoral system used in previous parliamentary and presidential selections. This indirect system involves MPs electing both their speakers and the president.

Qoorqoor emphasized the importance of transitioning away from indirect elections to restore the people’s power, enabling them to directly elect leaders who can effectively represent them and be held accountable.

“Conducting one person, one vote elections is achievable. Here in Galmudug, we pride ourselves on being among the regions best suited for such elections to take place,” said President Qoorqoor.

The initiative to move towards direct elections is part of Somalia’s broader aspiration to open a new chapter in its democratic process. The plan involves a phased approach, starting with local council elections, followed by elections at the state level, and culminating in federal elections.

By adopting this process, Somalia aims to strengthen its democratic institutions, empower citizens, and create a transparent and accountable governance system that reflects the will of the people.

Leaders indicated that remarks of President Qorqor reflect a growing commitment among Somali leaders to prioritize democratic reforms and ensure a brighter political future for the country.
