President Hassan Sheikh Highlights Success in Al-Shabaab Fight, Development Plans at Mogadishu Town-Hall Meeting

Mogadishu, Somalia; In an open debate engaging directly with the Public, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud discussed various critical issues, including the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab, the country’s economic prospects, and international relations.

Addressing the battle against Al-Shabaab, President Mohamud emphasized the success of the first phase of the operation, leading to the liberation of numerous areas. He highlighted the collaboration among different tribes, forming partnerships to eradicate terrorism. The President also announced the preparation of special security forces to further enhance national security.

Acknowledging the role of AMISOM in fostering peace and governance in Somalia, President Mohamud expressed his satisfaction that Somali Forces have advanced to a point where they can independently secure the nation’s leaders, government institutions, and the country’s leadership. He emphasized his confidence in the ability of the Somali National Army to safeguard the nation, marking a significant milestone since the country’s collapse.

Shifting focus to economic matters, President Mohamud presented optimistic projections following debt forgiveness. He stated that Somalia’s economy has already grown by 14% in 2023, with an ambitious target of achieving 22% growth in the coming year. The President linked this economic expansion to a parallel reduction in poverty, aiming to decrease it from 69% to 54%.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud underscored the importance of having a long-term vision for the country’s development, introducing the “Vision 2060.” This strategic plan aims to guide Somalia’s progress over the next 37 years, reflecting the determination and decisions made today for a prosperous future.
