Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hamsa Abdi Barre, has reiterated his government’s unwavering commitment to implementing a one-person-one-vote electoral system in the country, describing it as a necessary step toward restoring democratic legitimacy.
Speaking during a public address in Mogadishu, Prime Minister Hamsa stated that indirect elections primarily serve the interests of self-centered politicians and foreign powers, rather than reflecting the will of the Somali people.
“Indirect elections are not favored by any specific administration or clan. It is the self-serving politicians and foreign governments who benefit from such systems,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasized that his administration is focused not only on intensifying the war against the Al-Shabaab militant group but also on ensuring the implementation of direct, citizen-based elections.
He underscored that universal suffrage will empower the Somali people after more than 56 years of limited political participation, marking a turning point in the country’s governance and sovereignty.
“The time has come to return the voice and authority to the Somali people,” said Hamsa.
His remarks come as Somalia’s Federal Government continues its push for electoral reform, aiming to establish a democratic system that reflects the will of the public and reduces external influence in the country’s political affairs.
The government has previously stated that a one-person-one-vote election is central to building a stable, accountable, and inclusive political system in Somalia.
