The electoral committee appointed by President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen for South West State has announced the names of the 95 members chosen for the region’s 3rd State Parliament.
The committee said those 95 members will select among themselves the eldest member to serve as interim speaker until the full parliamentary leadership is elected.
Today’s meeting will determine whether the eldest member is eligible to become interim speaker — eligibility excludes those who are candidates for the speaker or deputy speaker posts — after which the interim speaker will appoint the committee that will run the election for the permanent parliamentary leadership.
This newly formed committee drawn from the State Parliament will also announce the date and procedures for the leadership vote, handle nominations and all matters related to the contest.
Once the 3rd State Parliament secures its leadership, the committee said it will announce a date for the presidential election in South West State; authorities emphasized the vote will be organized quickly.
The unilateral presidential election being organized by President Laftagareen in South West State has drawn opposition from officials originating from the region, who have dismissed the results as illegitimate.
