Hirshabelle State’s House of Representatives has elected a new parliamentary leadership, re-electing Abdihakim Luqman Haji Mohamed as Speaker and choosing two deputy speakers in a vote held in Jowhar, the regional capital.
Abdihakim Luqman secured 77 votes to retain the speakership.
Abdirahman Abdi Iidow was elected First Deputy Speaker with 98 votes, while Jama Ali Mahmoud won the position of Second Deputy Speaker with 97 votes in a show-of-hands vote. Mahmoud ran unopposed, according to Mustaqbal Media.
The election establishes a new leadership team to oversee the work of the regional parliament, following an earlier period in which an interim leadership drawn from among lawmakers presided over parliamentary sessions.
Hirshabelle’s political process is now expected to move towards the election of the state president and deputy president.
However, concerns remain among some members of the public over the power-sharing arrangements guiding the formation of the regional administration.
Despite these concerns, the electoral process is proceeding according to schedule. The newly elected parliamentary leaders received congratulations following their victory, having made commitments during their campaigns about how they intend to carry out their responsibilities.
