The African Union has announced the launch of a new peacekeeping mission in Somalia, set to begin in January 2025. The mission, named the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), will replace the current African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which succeeded the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in 2022.
The African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) approved the Strategic Concept of Operations for AUSSOM on August 1. The new mission will feature a substantial deployment of 11,911 personnel, including 11,146 military members, 680 police officers, and 85 civilians, organized into four operational sectors.
Egypt and Djibouti have pledged to contribute to AUSSOM, reflecting their commitment to regional stability and support for the mission’s goals. This new mission represents the third AU-led peacekeeping effort in Somalia since 2007 and aims to continue the efforts of its predecessors in stabilizing the country and supporting its transition to full self-reliance in security matters.
The establishment of AUSSOM underscores the AU’s ongoing commitment to addressing the security challenges in Somalia and advancing the stabilization process in the country. The mission will focus on supporting Somali security forces, maintaining order, and fostering stability as the country progresses toward long-term peace and self-sufficiency.
