A massive fire broke out at Bakara Market, Somalia’s largest and one of Mogadishu’s busiest commercial centres, sending thick columns of smoke across the capital.
The blaze erupted on Tuesday, with firefighters from the Mogadishu Fire and Rescue Service deployed to the scene as they worked to contain the spreading flames and prevent the fire from reaching other sections of the market.
Large clouds of smoke were visible from several parts of Mogadishu as the emergency response operation continued.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage were not immediately known. There were also no immediate reports on casualties.
Bakara Market is a major commercial hub in Mogadishu, hosting thousands of traders and businesses dealing in a wide range of goods. Fires in the densely packed market have previously caused significant losses to businesses and traders.
Authorities are expected to assess the damage once the fire has been brought fully under control and determine the cause of the latest incident.
