Liban Ahmed Hassan has been elected leader of Somalia’s Galmudug State for the next five years following an election held on Thursday at the regional parliament headquarters.
Hassan secured 72 votes, defeating his competitor Abdulkadir Abdullahi Dirir who received 14 votes. Three ballots were declared invalid, according to the results announced by Galmudug Parliament Speaker Hussein Mohamed Nur.
Officials from Somalia’s Federal Government, the National Independent Electoral Commission and other dignitaries attended the election.
Meanwhile, voting is underway to elect Galmudug’s deputy leader, with Abdiweli Garyare and Abdistasar Geelle contesting the position.
The election marks a significant political development for Galmudug, with the newly elected leadership expected to oversee the administration’s affairs and address the region’s political and development priorities.
