Landmark Transition: Somali Security Forces Set to Take Over Highly Fortified Villa Somalia as ATMIS Troop Withdrawal Continues

Somali security forces are poised to take over security responsibilities at The Villa Somalia, a fortified zone housing the Presidency and Prime Minister. The area has been under the protection of ATMIS (African Union Mission in Somalia) troops for the past 16 years with joint management by Somalia forces.

The phased withdrawal of ATMIS troops began earlier this year and is set to conclude in December 2024. The ATMIS Drawdown initiative aims to transition security responsibilities to Somali forces, emphasizing local ownership and sustainability. This strategic move empowers Somali forces to independently uphold peace and security within their nation, contributing to long-term stability.

“ATMISDrawdown aims to transition security responsibility to Somalis, fostering ownership and sustainability. This strategic move empowers Somali forces to independently maintain peace and security within their own country. By entrusting security responsibilities to local forces, the transition seeks to strengthen Somalia’s capacity to safeguard its people and contribute to lasting stability.”ATMIS said in a brief statement.

“The transfer of security responsibilities at Villa Somalia from ATMIS forces to Somali forces marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s history, demonstrating the country’s preparedness to assume control of its own security. “Somalia’s Minister of Information, Daud Aweis said highlighting the historical significance of this transition, emphasizing the country’s readiness to take charge of its security. This move aligns with the broader goal of strengthening Somalia’s capacity to safeguard its people.

The second phase of ATMIS Drawdown is set to resume next week, following UNSC Resolution 2710. By December 31, 2023, ATMIS plans to further reduce its troop presence in Somalia by 3000 and transfer control of several forward operating bases to Somali Security. This marks a critical step towards Somalia’s self-reliance in maintaining peace and security within its borders.
