President Hassan Sheikh meets Muslim World League Chief to discuss cooperation and countering extremism

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has received the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League, Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, at Villa Somalia for talks on strengthening cooperation between Somalia and the organisation.

The meeting focused “on expanding cooperation in humanitarian relief, social development and efforts to promote moderate Islamic values” , according to information released by the Somali presidency.

The discussions also addressed the importance of promoting a correct understanding of Islam and strengthening the principles of moderation and centrism.

President Hassan Sheikh and Al-Issa discussed ways to counter extremist and radical ideas, particularly those targeting young people and seeking to exploit religious beliefs to promote violence and intolerance.

The meeting forms part of Somalia’s efforts to strengthen engagement with international Islamic organisations on religious affairs, humanitarian assistance and social development.

The Muslim World League has been involved in initiatives promoting religious moderation and combating extremist ideologies, while Somalia continues to confront the threat posed by Al-Shabaab and other extremist groups.

The Somali government has increasingly emphasised religious education, community engagement and the promotion of moderate Islamic values as part of broader efforts to prevent violent extremism and protect young people from radicalisation.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for both sides to explore areas in which cooperation could be expanded to support humanitarian and social development programmes in Somalia.
