Hormuud Salaam Foundation Participates in High-Level Forum on Displacement in Africa

The African Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Forum, a three-day conference jointly organized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Amahoro Coalition, concluded in Nairobi, Kenya, with key stakeholders recognizing the vital role of private entities in supporting displaced populations across Africa.

The forum brought together delegates from across the continent representing governments, private businesses, and international organizations, all united in their mission to find sustainable solutions for the protection and care of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Africa. The discussions emphasized collaboration among governments, the private sector, and civil society.

Somalia was represented by a diverse delegation, including the Hormuud Salaam Foundation (HSF), the Banadir Regional Administration, BECO Company, City University, the Heritage Institute, and the Rural Development Center for the Diaspora.

Particular commendation was given to the Hormuud Salaam Foundation for its continued support of displaced persons and its broader humanitarian efforts in Somalia. The Foundation, along with Hormuud Telecom, was lauded for addressing urgent needs and improving service delivery to vulnerable populations.

In his address at the forum, HSF Chairperson Abdullahi Nur Osman reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to supporting displaced communities. “This forum was crucial in highlighting the role that businesses can play in supporting displaced persons. As you know, displaced persons often rely on mobile money services like EVC, which play a major role in sustaining livelihoods and the Somali economy,” he said.

Sahro Abdi, Director General of the Rural Development Center for the Diaspora, also spoke at the event, calling for sustained support and solidarity with displaced populations. “It is essential that we continue to show support for IDPs and ensure their basic needs are met,” she said.

Somalia remains one of the countries most affected by internal displacement, largely driven by ongoing conflict and insecurity.

The forum closed with a call to action for all stakeholders to scale up efforts and deepen cooperation in addressing the root causes of displacement while enhancing the resilience and dignity of affected communities.
