Greece: Somali citizen sentenced to 146 years in prison.

A Somali citizen seeking asylum has been sentenced to 146 years in prison for human trafficking, according to a Greek court ruling.

Somali citizen, 27, was charged with smuggling migrants from Turkey to Greece.

The European Council for Refugees and Prisoners (ECRE) reports that the man, named Mohamad, a young father of four children, fled from Somalia to Turkey.

He was one of 34 people who sailed from Turkey to Greece in December 2020.

According to ECRE, using a boat they sailed near Lesbos Island with two passengers aboard.

Others were captured by Greek coast guards, including Mohamad.

Mohamad is said to have been driving. For this reason, Greek authorities have filed a lawsuit against him for illegally traveling to Greece.

He was also charged with account of endangering the lives of others and caused the death of two people.

Other survivors of the boat testified that Mohamad was trying to save their lives when he took over the boat’s control.

It is the second decision against migrants accused of human trafficking in Greece in less than a month, according to ECRE.

On April 23, other Syrian refugees were sentenced to 52 years in prison and a fine of € 242,000, for allegedly illegally entering the country.
