Members of Galmudug’s House of Representatives are preparing to elect their Speaker and Deputy Speaker in a vote scheduled for Sunday in Dhusamareb, the capital of the regional state.
The preparations follow the swearing-in of 89 newly elected members of the regional parliament on Friday night, marking a key stage in the formation of Galmudug’s new legislative leadership.
For the first time, Galmudug has a House of Representatives whose members were elected through a public vote and represent political organisations registered with Somalia’s Independent National Electoral Commission.
Candidates seeking the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker have begun campaigning ahead of Sunday’s election. Lawmakers are expected to engage with the candidates throughout Saturday and into Sunday morning before voting takes place.
The election of parliamentary leaders is an important step in establishing the new legislature and advancing the regional state’s political and institutional processes.
Further details on the candidates and the election results are expected as the process unfolds.
