Ethiopia’s Abiy Ahmed appoints Six-Month interim administration for Tigray

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has appointed an interim administration for the northern Tigray region, giving it a six-month mandate to oversee key administrative functions, including preparations for elections, according to a report by Mustaqbal Media.

The interim administration has been tasked with maintaining essential government operations and improving the delivery of public services across the region.

Its responsibilities include facilitating the resettlement of people displaced by conflict, strengthening communication between the federal government and local communities, and addressing other administrative priorities.

Abiy’s government has pledged to cooperate with the interim officials and provide the support needed to carry out their responsibilities during the six-month period.

Most members of the newly appointed administration reportedly come from the Tigray People’s Forces (TPF), a group formed by former members of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) who broke away from the party. The group was involved in recent fighting that saw TPLF forces lose control of Mekelle and other areas, according to the report.

The appointment comes amid continuing political and administrative challenges in Tigray, where the implementation of post-conflict arrangements and preparations for future elections remain significant issues.

Further details about the composition of the interim administration and the specific timetable for elections were not provided in the report.
