Former Somali Prime Minister supports key Constitutional Amendments

Former Prime Minister of the federal government of Somalia, Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, and Ambassador Dahir Mahmoud Geelle addressed the political situation in the country during a press conference held last night in Mogadishu.

They expressed their stance regarding the constitutional crisis between the government and the opposition.

Omar Abdirashid stated his full support for the amendments to Chapter 4 of the Constitution and thanked the relevant committees and Parliament for their efforts.

“We prefer that the constitutional issue be brought before Parliament long time but by the grace of God it was possible today, we wish to thank the government for fulfilling what was agreed upon.”He said

He also pointed out that the agreement previously made with Villa Somalia is part of this process, and he welcomed the government’s commitment to implement it.

“We wholeheartedly support the first reading of Chapter 4 that has been submitted to Parliament, and we truly commend the government and the committees involved for aligning with the agreement we signed on August 25,” he added.

Furthermore, he noted that what remains now is the elections and the upcoming negotiations between the government and the Somali Future Council, expressing hope for a successful outcome.

“What is left to address are the election issues, and we are anticipating discussions between the Future Council and the government, from which we hope a consensus will emerge,” he concluded.

These remarks come as the Somali Parliament debated amendments to articles 49, 50, and 54, which were proposed by the relevant constitutional committees just yesterday.
