Ethiopia Lobbying to Maintain Troop Presence in Somalia

The Ethiopian government is actively lobbying to retain its military presence in Somalia, following a recent decision by the Federal Government of Somalia to exclude Ethiopian troops from the newly established African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

Emerging reports suggest that Ethiopian leaders are pushing for their forces to remain deployed, particularly in Somalia’s southern and central regions. Ethiopia argues that its military presence is crucial for securing the border and preventing Al-Shabaab attacks.

Ethiopian state media has reported that the country’s leadership is insisting on the continued presence of its troops in Somalia to participate in counterterrorism operations against Al-Shabaab.

Previously part of the now-defunct African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), Ethiopian troops were excluded from the new AUSSOM initiative due to repeated incidents in which their forces allegedly violated Somalia’s sovereignty.

The diplomatic tension follows a December agreement between Somalia and Ethiopia to continue dialogue aimed at resolving disputes. The disagreement stems from Ethiopia’s controversial agreement with Somaliland in early 2024, which sparked tensions between the two nations.

Ethiopia’s push to maintain a foothold in Somalia underscores the broader regional implications of the fight against terrorism and the evolving security dynamics in the Horn of Africa.
