Somalia’s Independent National Electoral Commission has officially reopened the registration of political organisations, giving them 21 days to register for participation in the upcoming public elections to select members of the 12th Federal Parliament.
The commission said the reopening provides a fresh opportunity for political organisations that did not participate in previous public elections to register and compete for seats in both the House of the People and the Upper House in the 2027 elections.
According to the commission, the registration process will close on November 22. It also announced that political organisations will be publicly listed as they complete the registration process.
The Opposition figures have meanwhile established political organisations and parties that are not yet registered with the commission. However, it remains unclear whether they will take advantage of the opportunity, given their criticism of the commission’s management of the electoral process.
The opposition has repeatedly questioned the commission’s approach to organising the elections, raising uncertainty over whether its affiliated political organisations will participate in the registration exercise.
