Business Owners in Bakara Market Protest Land Grabbing and Displacement

Business owners in the Bagaashka section of Bakara Market, one of the largest market in Somalia are reportedly strongly complaining about land grabbing and forced displacement

Many of these traders have reportedly operated their businesses in this area for nearly 50 years, and they are now facing pressure to vacate their premises.

One trader spoke to the media, accusing the Somali government of sending armed thugs to coerce them into leaving their legally established businesses.

“We have built our livelihoods in this market for a long time. We will not accept being forcibly displaced while others are being prioritized for this land,” he stated.

Reports indicate that traders were informed they had only five days to vacate their stalls, prompting widespread protests within Bakara Market. This market is not only crucial for Somalia’s economy but also ranks among the largest in Africa.

Faiza Jeyte, a member of the Somali Parliament, has voiced her concerns regarding the situation. She emphasized that the local authorities in Howlwadaag and the police in Banadir are responsible for ensuring the safety and security of citizens and their property, and they should not be complicit in the displacement of small traders.

She further warned that if the ongoing issues in Bakara are not addressed promptly, the local administration and police would bear the responsibility.

“Bakara Market is the economic lifeline for the Somali people; it cannot be sacrificed for the interests of a few individuals seeking personal gains,” she argued, highlighting the market’s historical significance and value.
