Bardhere Bridge Collapse: Heavy Flooding Severely Impacts South-Western Somali Town

In a blow to the south-western town of Bardhere, a major bridge has collapsed due to intense flooding caused by persistent heavy rains in Somalia. The bridge, which served as the sole connection between the two sides of the Bardhere district, was crucial for the movement of people traveling between towns and villages in the Gedo region, as reported by the state-owned Somali National News Agency (Sonna).

The collapse has raised concerns among locals who now find themselves isolated from their neighborhoods. The Gedo region, already grappling with devastating floods, has witnessed severe repercussions, with more than a dozen casualties reported across the country. Thousands of individuals have been either displaced or cut off from essential services.

In response to the crisis, authorities have taken immediate action by dispatching two rescue boats to address the emergent situation. The flooding in Gedo is part of a larger pattern of heavier-than-normal rains affecting Somalia, following one of the country’s most severe droughts in four decades.
