AUSSOM, UNMAS strengthen cooperation on counter-IED and Mine action efforts in Somalia

The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in addressing improvised explosive device (IED) threats and advancing mine action efforts across Somalia.

AUSSOM Force Commander Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma held talks with UNMAS Chief Fran O’Grady in Mogadishu, where the two sides discussed ways to enhance collaboration in countering explosive hazards that continue to pose serious security risks to civilians and security forces.

According to officials, the meeting focused on expanding training programs, building sustainable national capacity, and improving Somalia’s ability to respond to threats posed by landmines, unexploded ordnance, and IEDs.

Both AUSSOM and UNMAS emphasized the importance of supporting Somali security institutions through technical assistance and specialized training aimed at strengthening long-term resilience against explosive threats.

The discussions also highlighted the role of mine action and explosive ordnance disposal in creating safer conditions for communities, facilitating stabilization efforts, and supporting the country’s broader peace and security objectives.

The renewed partnership comes as Somalia continues efforts to improve security and expand government authority in areas affected by conflict, where explosive hazards remain a major challenge to civilian safety and development initiatives.
