Military experts from countries contributing troops to the African Union mission in Somalia, AUSSOM, are holding discussions on the future of their deployment, particularly in a situation where there are funding gaps to sustain operations.
The meeting focuses on resolving key questions currently on the table, including how to continue the mission if financial support declines, how to secure the necessary resources, whether it may be necessary to reduce the number of troops, and, if needed, whether contributing forces could be returned to their home countries.
The conclusions expected to emerge from these talks will be added to the recommendations coming out of prior meetings held since the 8th of this month, as well as additional sessions planned for the remaining days of July.
The heads of the troop-contributing countries are also reportedly scheduled to meet in Kampala, Uganda, on July 31, 2026, where they plan to issue a joint statement after exchanging updates.
Somalia on its part is expected to present its own plan for strengthening national self-reliance including what support it still needs and to deliver a clear message to the partner countries backing the African Union mission, which began in 2007.
