The Chinese government has warned Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro over remarks he reportedly made in support of Taiwan, saying Beijing considers Taiwan part of China.
In a statement, the Chinese Embassy in Mogadishu reportedly expressed concern over Irro’s comments and warned that further actions on the issue could lead to unspecified measures by Beijing.
China maintains that Somaliland is part of Somalia and that Taiwan is part of Chinese territory. Beijing has previously opposed official interactions between Somaliland and Taiwan, citing its “One China” principle.
The warning comes amid continued relations between Somaliland and Taiwan. Somaliland established official ties with Taiwan in 2020, while representatives from both sides have continued to defend their relationship.
Beijing has previously said that interactions between Somaliland and Taiwan undermine China’s sovereignty and Somalia’s territorial integrity, while supporting Somalia’s position on national unity and the One China principle.
