Final preparations are underway at Villa Hargeisa in Mogadishu ahead of today’s election of a new Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People.
The parliamentary election is being held to fill the position left vacant by former Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Mohamed, popularly known as Adan Madoobe, following his election as President of South West State.
Two members of Parliament have been formally cleared to contest the speakership: Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur (Jaamac) and Abdulqadir Omar Macallin (Daada). The Speaker Election Committee certified both candidates after confirming that they had met the requirements to participate in the election.
The election is scheduled for Monday, August 10, with lawmakers expected to hear the candidates’ final addresses before casting their votes. The electoral process follows a timetable announced earlier by the parliamentary committee, which oversaw candidate registration and verification during the past week.
The Speaker of the House of the People is one of Somalia’s most important constitutional offices, with responsibility for presiding over parliamentary sittings, guiding legislative proceedings and representing the lower house of the Federal Parliament.
The leadership contest comes at a politically significant moment for Somalia as the Federal Parliament begins a new session and the country continues to navigate debates over political reforms, elections and relations between the Federal Government and Federal Member States.
The outcome of today’s vote will determine who takes charge of the House of the People and could have implications for the direction and functioning of Somalia’s legislature during the coming period.
Members of Parliament, parliamentary officials and other stakeholders have been gathering at Villa Hargeisa as preparations enter their final stage, with attention now focused on the two candidates and the lawmakers who will decide the next Speaker.
