Prime Minister Hamza lays foundation stone for road linking Soobe junction in Mogadishu

Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, on Tuesday presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of the road connecting Soobe Junction to Buula Hubay in Wadajir District, Banaadir Region.

The two-kilometre stretch is a key transport route serving several neighbourhoods, hosting numerous business centres, health facilities, and educational institutions. The road had fallen into disrepair, severely affecting mobility and access within the area.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Hamza described the project as deeply personal, recalling a past incident in which he narrowly escaped gunfire while using the same route before assuming office.

“I once lived near this area and used to commute daily to Dharkaynley. This road holds memories for me — at one point, armed men exchanged fire right here. My vehicle was caught in the crossfire, and I remember struggling to breathe as people lay over me for cover,”
said Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

The Prime Minister commended ongoing reconstruction projects across Mogadishu, noting that rehabilitating major roads is part of the government’s efforts to improve mobility, support local commerce, and enhance urban infrastructure.

“Rebuilding Mogadishu’s roads is not just about transport — it is about restoring dignity, safety, and economic opportunity for our people,” he added.

The project is expected to ease traffic congestion, connect key residential and commercial zones, and contribute to the broader urban renewal plan spearheaded by the Federal Government and the Banaadir Regional Administration.
