Former Banadir regional security chief, Saadaq Omar Hassan, popularly known as Saadaq Joon, is contesting today’s election for the House of the People seat HOP248, a position he previously won in January 2022.
The by-election comes after the sudden resignation of MP Mohamed Abdi Hassan, known as Afwayne, who stepped down from his parliamentary seat earlier this week citing personal reasons. His departure marked the first resignation from the 11th Federal Parliament of Somalia since it was inaugurated.
Saadaq Joon, who registered his candidacy on Thursday, will face off against Shaafici Ahmed Ali (Cakoore), a newcomer whose candidacy was approved by the election commission. The contest is being closely watched due to its unusual nature and the political weight it carries.
Analysts highlight three unique aspects of today’s vote:
1. Historic Resignation – Afwayne’s exit makes him the first MP of the current parliament to voluntarily resign.
2. Rapid By-Election – HOP248 is the first parliamentary seat to be filled within days of becoming vacant, unlike other vacant seats that often take months to resolve.
3. Rare Political Comeback – If successful, Saadaq Joon would become the first legislator in Somalia’s 11th Parliament to be elected twice to the same seat.
