During a historic event marking Somalia’s return to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a non-permanent member for the 2025-2026 term, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Abukar Osman, delivered a powerful keynote speech. In his address, Osman reaffirmed the country’s commitment to upholding the UN Charter and promoting global peace and security.
“This is a moment of pride and responsibility for Somalia,” Osman stated, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to multilateral governance and its aspirations to serve as a “voice for underrepresented nations and a partner in achieving global stability.” He further highlighted Somalia’s resolve to prioritize collaboration with the African Union and the Arab League, ensuring that regional perspectives are integrated into the Security Council’s deliberations.
In Mogadishu, the historic occasion was celebrated with a ceremony led by Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Speaking at the event, Fiqi remarked, “This achievement underscores Somalia’s commitment to governance on a global platform and reinforces our role as a responsible member of the international community.”
Somalia’s election to the UNSC marks the first time in 54 years that the country has held a seat on the council, signaling its growing influence on the global stage.
