In a development for Somalia’s energy sector, the Somali government is set to welcome a Turkish vessel on Friday, which will conduct seismic surveys aimed at exploring potential oil and natural gas reserves off Somalia’s coast. This operation is part of a cooperation agreement signed in March between Turkey’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and Somalia’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. The Turkish vessel will collect seismic data from Somalia’s offshore areas to identify hydrocarbon deposits and evaluate the potential for commercial oil and gas extraction.
The exploration project underscores Turkey’s growing engagement with Somalia, with both nations viewing the initiative as a critical step toward economic development and energy security. For Somalia, which has faced decades of instability, this exploration brings hope for diversifying its economy, generating revenue, and creating job opportunities, should commercially viable reserves be identified.
The seismic survey is expected to take several months, during which advanced technology will be used to measure and analyze subsurface structures. This data is vital in assessing the volume and feasibility of natural resource extraction. The Somali Ministry of Petroleum has indicated that these efforts align with its vision to develop a transparent and sustainable energy sector, with careful consideration of environmental regulations and the potential impacts on marine ecosystems.
