At least 55 people have survived after a passenger aircraft crashed near Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu on Tuesday, airport officials said.
The aircraft, which was en route to the central Somali city of Galkayo, reportedly developed a technical fault less than 15 minutes after takeoff. The pilot attempted to return to Mogadishu for an emergency landing, but during the maneuver the plane veered off the designated runway area and crashed on the seaside section near the airport.
Authorities at Aden Adde International Airport confirmed that the aircraft was carrying 55 people, including passengers and crew members. No fatalities or serious injuries were reported, though the plane sustained significant damage.
Emergency response teams and airport fire services were quickly deployed to the scene and successfully evacuated all those on board safely.
An investigation is expected to be launched to determine the exact cause of the technical failure that led to the crash.
