At least 20 people have been killed in an attack by Al-Shabaab militants on a Galmudug military base in the town of Wisil in the Mudug region this morning.
Sources in Wisil said that after a car bomb exploded, Galmudug forces repulsed an Al-Shabaab attack on the town, with both sides using lethal weapons.
The attack was one in which civilians were caught up in shells and bullets exchanges by the waring parties at their homes.
Residents in Wisil said the death toll could be higher. There is however no official statement from the Galmudug administration.
Wisil, a strategic town in Galmudug, was one of the safest towns in Galmudug. Galmudug has been reorganizing its forces in recent days, reportedly preparing for operations against Al-Shabaab, and Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoor-Qoor visited the 21st Army base on Friday urging the forces there to strengthen the security.
Meanwhile, at least six civilians were killed when their vehicle struck a landmine between the towns of Wisil and Gawaan. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had killed 34 members of the 21st Division.
