The Kenyan government has announced a further reduction in the price of subsidized fertilizer and certified maize seed as it moves to cushion farmers affected by drought and support the recovery of agricultural production.<\/p>\n
Under the new intervention, a 50-kilogram bag of subsidized fertilizer will retail at KSh 2,000, down from KSh 2,500. The government will also cover 50 percent of the cost of certified maize seed, reducing the farmer\u2019s price from KSh 300 to KSh 150 per kilogramme.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development said the maize seed subsidy will bring the price of a 2-kilogramme pack down to KSh 300 from KSh 600, while a 10-kilogramme pack will cost KSh 1,500 instead of KSh 3,000. A 25-kilogramme pack will similarly fall from KSh 7,500 to KSh 3,750.<\/p>\n
The intervention targets approximately 40 million kilogrammes of certified maize seed and represents an estimated KSh 6 billion in government subsidies.<\/p>\n
The subsidized fertilizer and seed will be distributed to farmers through government-designated distribution channels.<\/p>\n
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the measures are part of President William Ruto\u2019s administration\u2019s policy of shifting government support from consumption subsidies toward production subsidies by reducing the cost of agricultural inputs.<\/p>\n
The government said the latest fertilizer reduction builds on the National Fertilizer Subsidy Programme introduced in 2022. At the time, a 50-kilogramme bag retailed at approximately KSh 7,500 before the subsidy reduced the price to KSh 2,500. The latest reduction to KSh 2,000 represents a decline of more than 73 percent from the 2022 price.<\/p>\n
Since 2022, approximately 33.55 million 50-kilogramme bags of subsidized fertilizer have been distributed to about 1.98 million farmers, with government support estimated at KSh 78.79 billion.<\/p>\n
The ministry also pointed to increased maize production during the period, saying output rose from 34.3 million 90-kilogramme bags in 2022 to 73 million bags in 2025. Maize imports, meanwhile, declined by more than 66.5 percent over the same period.<\/p>\n
The government said the latest intervention is intended to prevent drought losses from undermining these gains by ensuring affected farmers can afford the inputs needed for the next planting season.<\/p>\n
\u201cA farmer who has lost a crop to drought must not also lose the ability to plant the next crop because fertilizer and seed are beyond reach,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n
The government said it will also continue investing in irrigation, water harvesting and other climate-smart agricultural measures aimed at strengthening Kenya\u2019s resilience to changing weather patterns and reducing farmers\u2019 vulnerability to drought.<\/p>\n
