Somalia and T\u00fcrkiye are marking the 15th anniversary of the renewal of diplomatic relations and friendship between the two countries, with a major ceremony being held in Mogadishu attended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.<\/p>\n
The anniversary commemorates the landmark visit by then-Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan to Somalia on August 19, 2011, at a time when the country was facing severe conflict and a devastating humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n
Erdo\u011fan’s visit, accompanied by his family, was widely regarded as a significant demonstration of solidarity with Somalia during one of the country’s most difficult periods. T\u00fcrkiye subsequently expanded its engagement with Somalia beyond humanitarian assistance, developing a broad strategic partnership.<\/p>\n
Over the past 15 years, the two countries have strengthened cooperation in a range of areas, including trade and investment, security and defence, fisheries, technology and economic development.<\/p>\n
T\u00fcrkiye has also remained an important development and humanitarian partner for Somalia, supporting infrastructure and institutional development alongside humanitarian and economic initiatives.<\/p>\n
The anniversary provides an opportunity for both countries to highlight the evolution of their relationship from an initial humanitarian partnership into a wider strategic alliance.<\/p>\n
For many Somalis, T\u00fcrkiye’s engagement during the 2011 humanitarian crisis remains an important part of the bilateral relationship. The partnership has since developed through high-level political engagement, economic cooperation and security collaboration.<\/p>\n
The 15th anniversary is therefore being marked as a reflection of the deepening ties between Mogadishu and Ankara and their shared commitment to expanding cooperation in the years ahead.<\/p>\n
