Uganda\u2019s Chief General of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has called for the AUSSOM mission force to remain in Somalia, citing concerns over financial shortfalls.<\/p>\n
Speaking during a special meeting in Kampala with military commanders from countries participating in the new AUSSOM operation, General Muhoozi said that maintaining security in Somalia requires decisive action by African partner states.<\/p>\n
He added that this is necessary to overcome the reduction in support from the international community.<\/p>\n
The general warned that the ongoing lack of funding could affect the Somalia peacekeeping effort that has been operating since 2007.<\/p>\n
The remarks come after the United Nations Office for Support to Somalia stopped financial support for the AUSSOM mission. That support is set to expire on December 31, 2026.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, tomorrow, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the heads of the countries contributing troops in Somalia are expected to hold a special meeting in Kampala, where decisions will be made regarding the future of the AUSSOM mission.<\/p>\n
