Turkish media outlet TRHaber has reported that Turkey has expedited the construction of a military base in Las Qoray, Las Anod, located in the Sanaag region. This development reportedly comes in response to Israel’s intentions to establish a military presence in Somaliland.

According to the report, Ankara views this situation as potentially impactful on the security and strategic interests of the region, prompting it to strengthen its military footprint in Somalia, particularly in the northeastern part of the country.

Las Anod, which is governed by Puntland, reportedly has seen the construction of this base with the approval and cooperation of the Federal Government of Somalia.

Turkey has historically been a significant military and security partner for Somalia, providing training for its forces and participating in anti-terrorism efforts.

As of now, there has been no official statement from the Federal Government of Somalia or the Puntland Administration detailing the acceleration of this base’s construction. However, this move coincides with a period of heightened security changes and competition among foreign powers in the Horn of Africa.

The TR Haber report also indicates that Turkey aims to reinforce its role in the region and prevent any actions that could disrupt the security balance in Somalia and throughout the Horn of Africa.
