In a move to boost Somalia\u2019s climate resilience and disaster preparedness, the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahmoud Moalim Abdulle, presided over a high-level meeting in Nairobi on Wednesday to “review and strengthen the use of the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) system implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).”<\/p>\n
The meeting brought together Somali policymakers, technical experts, and senior government officials to discuss how the DTM system can be further integrated into Somalia\u2019s national early warning and response mechanisms, especially in the face of growing climate-related hazards such as droughts, floods, and displacement.<\/p>\n
In his opening remarks, Commissioner Mahmoud Moalim emphasized the importance of evidence-based data in planning effective responses and building community resilience. \u201cWe are seeing more frequent and severe climate shocks in Somalia. Discussions at the Nairobi meeting focused on enhancing the interoperability of the DTM system with national databases, improving data accessibility for local authorities, and training Somali institutions on data analysis for disaster risk reduction and planning.<\/p>\n
IOM Somalia representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Somalia\u2019s disaster management and resilience goals, highlighting ongoing efforts to ensure that the system is responsive to both humanitarian and development needs.<\/p>\n
The engagement in Nairobi forms part of broader cooperation between Somalia and international partners aimed at addressing the impacts of climate change while strengthening institutional capacities to manage and mitigate disaster risks.<\/p>\n
Experts at the meeting noted that the DTM could also play a crucial role in informing national policies and contributing to the implementation of Somalia\u2019s National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy.<\/p>\n
