Somalia’s parliamentary leadership has set February 22, 2025, as the official reopening date for the 6th session of the 11th Federal Parliament, ending weeks of uncertainty over the matter. Both the House of the People (Golaha Shacabka) and the Upper House (Aqalka Sare) confirmed the decision in separate announcements on Monday.

The session was originally scheduled to commence on February 6, 2025, but was postponed at the request of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, with no immediate alternative date provided according to the sources . The delay fueled speculation and debate within political circles, as opposition figures and analysts questioned the reasons behind the postponement.

The reopening of Parliament comes at a crucial time for Somalia, as lawmakers are expected to debate key national issues, including ongoing security operations against Al-Shabaab, electoral reforms, and economic recovery efforts. Political observers suggest that the delay may have been linked to behind-the-scenes consultations on pressing legislative priorities particularly on elections and the government’s policy direction.

Lawmakers will likely seek updates from the government on security developments, federal-state relations, and the status of agreements with international partners.

With Parliament now set to reconvene, all eyes will be on the legislative agenda and the potential impact of recent political maneuvers on Somalia’s governance and stability.
