Hormuud Telecom Somalia Inc., the leading telecommunications provider in the country, has announced its ambitious plans to expand solar-powered green data centers to support the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure both locally and globally.

The Chief Executive Officer, Ahmed Mohamud Yusuf, stated that the company is leveraging Somalia’s abundant sunlight to create sustainable data solutions. “Somalia is one of the sunniest countries in the world, and many of our data centers already run on solar power during the day,” Yusuf noted in a statement.

Hormuud currently operates 11 data centers with a combined capacity of 10 megawatt-hours, with 95% of their energy coming from solar power. The company’s expansion plans will add more capacity, driven by the evolving needs of the AI economy.

This initiative highlights Hormuud’s dual focus on sustainability and technology, making it a pioneer in integrating green energy with advanced telecommunications infrastructure in the region.

Operating in a complex environment marked by security concerns and infrastructure gaps, Hormuud has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation. “We operate in challenging conditions, but Somalia is brimming with opportunities,” Yusuf emphasized.

Founded 22 years ago during Somalia’s recovery from civil unrest, Hormuud has played a pivotal role in the country’s digital transformation. The company has co-financed two of the four submarine cables connecting Somalia to the global internet and expanded fiber-optic networks across key cities.

Additionally, Hormuud is rolling out 5G technology, targeting 70% population coverage within the next year.

Hormuud serves over 4 million customers, representing about 20% of Somalia’s population. Beyond its technological advancements, the company has demonstrated a strong commitment to social impact, facilitating the direct distribution of £800 million ($1 billion) in humanitarian aid over the last five years.

Owned by 13,000 shareholders, Hormuud has established itself as a key player in a competitive market alongside companies like Somtel, Telesom, and Golis Telecom Somalia.

By combining renewable energy with technological innovation, Hormuud is setting new benchmarks for sustainability in Somalia’s digital economy. Its vision for solar-powered data centers aligns with the global push for green technology and positions Somalia as a potential leader in AI-driven solutions in the Horn of Africa.

Mustaqbal

Hormuud Telecom Somalia Inc., the leading telecommunications provider in the country, has announced its ambitious plans to expand solar-powered green data centers to support the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure both locally and globally.
