Hormuud Telecom has announced a monumental initiative to provide housing for 10,000 displaced families living in precarious conditions on the outskirts of Mogadishu.

The plan reportedly includes offering land and constructing homes, marking a significant step toward improving the lives of Somalia’s internally displaced population.

The announcement was made by the leadership of Hormuud Salaam Foundation during a conference held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The event was attended by the Somali government delegation, led by Minister of Planning Hon Mohamud Abdirahman Sheikh Farah (Beene-Beene) and Hormuud Salaam Foundation’s Chairman, Abdullahi Nur Osman, who formally declared the commitment.

The designated area for the housing project is in Jazeera, located in the southern part of Mogadishu. The leaders indicated that the initiative represents a groundbreaking effort to support Somalia’s internally displaced persons (IDPs), providing them with stability and hope for a better future.

Organized by the United Nations and the Somali government, the Geneva conference focused on sustainable solutions for the nearly one million displaced people in Somalia.

The initiative aligns with the Somali National Strategy for Durable Solutions, a collaborative framework involving the government, international donors, and aid organizations.

Aid agencies have previously reported having funds available for building housing but faced challenges in securing land. This joint effort by Hormuud, the Somali government, the United Nations, and international donors marks a significant milestone in addressing this critical issue.

The housing initiative in Jazeera is expected to set a precedent for future programs aimed at supporting vulnerable populations across Somalia.
