Somalia\u2019s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi has announced the federal government\u2019s decision to deploy troops to the country\u2019s borders to curb the smuggling of illegal arms from neighboring Ethiopia. The move comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen national security and prevent the circulation of weapons in the hands of unauthorized individuals, he said .<\/p>\n
During a press briefing held on Sunday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Mogadishu, Minister Fiqi stressed the government\u2019s commitment to enforcing strict measures against those involved in arms smuggling, vowing that all individuals, including politicians, who are found to be involved in these illegal activities will face severe consequences.<\/p>\n
“The smuggling of illicit arms from Ethiopia poses a serious threat to our national security. We will take decisive action to control our borders and ensure that anyone, regardless of their status, who is involved in these activities will be blacklisted and held accountable,” Minister Fiqi stated.<\/p>\n
The announcement follows recent concerns over the rise in arms smuggling operations, which has been linked to fueling instability in various regions of the country. The Somali government said it is determined to tighten its borders to prevent further illegal arms from entering the country and ending up in the hands of criminal groups or militants.<\/p>\n
In response to a question from the press, Minister Fiqi highlighted the federal government\u2019s zero-tolerance policy on illicit arms smuggling and said that those found responsible, including politicians, would face legal repercussions. \u201cWe are serious about securing our borders and ensuring that no one is above the law. Smuggling arms is a crime that undermines the stability of the entire nation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The deployment of troops to border regions will be part of a coordinated effort involving security agencies to combat arms smuggling networks and prevent the proliferation of weapons that could be used in terrorist activities or other violent crimes.<\/p>\n
