An Israel airstrike in Gaza has killed at least 18 people from the same family, even as mediators expressed optimism for an imminent ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas after 10 months of war.<\/p>\n
The airstrike on Saturday hit a house and adjacent warehouse sheltering displaced people at the entrance to the town of Zawaida, according to the al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital in Deir al-Balah, to where casualties were taken. An Associated Press reporter there counted the dead.<\/p>\n
Among those killed was Sami Jawad al-Ejlah, a wholesaler who coordinated with the Israeli military to bring meat and fish to Gaza. The dead also included his two wives, 11 of their children aged two to 22, the children\u2019s grandmother and three other relatives, according to a list provided by the hospital.<\/p>\n
Omar al-Dreemli, a relative, said: \u201cWe are in the morgue seeing indescribable scenes of limbs and severed heads and children who are dismembered.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was a peaceful man,\u201d said Abu Ahmed, a neighbour. More than 40 civilians were sheltering in the house and warehouse at the time, he said.<\/p>\n
The Israeli military, which rarely comments on individual strikes, said it had struck \u201cterrorist infrastructure\u201d in central Gaza where rockets had been fired toward Israel in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
\u201cReports were received that as a result of the strike, civilians in an adjacent structure were killed. The incident is under review,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n
Another mass evacuation was ordered for parts of central Gaza. The Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee in a post on X cited Palestinian rocket fire and said Palestinians in areas in and around the urban Maghazi refugee camp should leave.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe suffering began from the day we left our homes,\u201d said Ahmad Omrani, one of those affected by the order, as heavily laden vehicles, bikes and donkey carts weaved through the rubble. \u201cWe suffer from fear and anxiety, and fear for the children playing in the street. You cannot sleep, sit or eat well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Issa Murad, a Palestinian displaced to Deir al-Balah, said: \u201cDuring each round of negotiations, they exert pressure by forcing evacuations and committing massacres.\u201d<\/p>\n
The vast majority of Gaza\u2019s population has been displaced, often multiple times, and about 84% of the territory has been put under evacuation orders by the Israeli military, according to the UN.<\/p>\n
The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed across the border on 7 October, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 250 to Gaza. More than 100 were released in a November ceasefire. About 110 are believed to be in Gaza, though Israeli authorities believe around a third are dead.<\/p>\n
Israel says it has killed more than 17,000 Hamas militants, without providing evidence.
\nGaza\u2019s health ministry said at least 40,074 Palestinians had been killed in the war. Thousands more are believed to be buried under the rubble and tens of thousands more have been injured.<\/p>\n
Mediators have spent months pursuing a three-phase plan in which Hamas would release the hostages in exchange for a lasting ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the release of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.<\/p>\n
The US president, Joe Biden, said on Friday that \u201cwe are closer than we have ever been\u201d to a deal. But those comments were dismissed by a senior Hamas official on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo say that we are getting close to a deal is an illusion,\u201d the Hamas political bureau member Sami Abu Zuhri told AFP. \u201cWe are not facing a deal or real negotiations, but rather the imposing of American diktats.\u201d<\/p>\n
