President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud celebrated the election, describing it as a pivotal moment in the nation\u2019s journey towards peace and stability. “This victory amplifies Somalia’s voice for peace and cooperation globally,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of Somalia\u2019s role in international affairs.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre also extended his congratulations to the Somali people for the successful bid. He highlighted the nation\u2019s commitment to establishing a prominent presence on the global stage and addressing pressing global challenges and security issues. “This milestone signals Somalia’s dedication to actively engaging in international affairs and contributing to the maintenance of peace and security on a global scale,” the Prime Minister underscored.<\/p>\n
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Executive Secretary, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, congratulated the Federal Republic of Somalia on its election. “This is a testament to the resilience and progress of the Somali people,” he remarked, acknowledging Somalia’s strides towards peace, stability, and prosperity.<\/p>\n
The United Nations in Somalia (UNSOM) also issued a statement congratulating the Somali government and people. “Somalia\u2019s election today to a seat on the UN Security Council for 2025-26 is a recognition of the progress it has made on its path to peace, stability, and prosperity,” the statement read.<\/p>\n
Somalia secured 179 votes in the General Assembly, demonstrating strong international support. The country will join Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, and Panama as new non-permanent members, replacing Mozambique, Switzerland, Malta, Japan, and Ecuador. This marks Somalia’s second term on the UNSC, the first being in the early 1970s.<\/p>\n
The Somali diplomatic office at the UN emphasized their commitment to upholding international law and amplifying all voices within the Council. “Our country will use its term on the UNSC to uphold international law and ensure diverse voices are heard,” the office stated.<\/p>\n
